Give us home spider (2017)

Give Us Home Spider is a research based art project by Wixárika artist Edgar Fabián Frías in collaboration with policy advisor and advocate Demi Espinoza; inspired by the Wixárika’s cosmologies and their political and spiritual resistance against international mining corporations. Give Us Home Spider traces the pathways of economic distribution and environmental racism running through Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, and the Coachella Valley; reenacting the Wixárika’s sacred journey to Wirikuta. Five sites were chosen to be activated by rituals including Coachella Valley High School in Thermal, CA and the TXI Cement Quarry in Bloomington, CA. Yoli had the honor of participating in both of these rituals as a performer, ceremonialist, and procession member.

This project was part of Coastal/Border at Angel's Gate Cultural Center curated by Raquel Gutiérrez and Martabel Wasserman and a part of Pacific Standard Time : LA/LA organized by the Getty Foundation.

Ritual 4: Coachella Valley High School in Thermal, CA

Documentation: Josh Vasquez, Yoli, Thaddeus Pedisich, and Demi Espinoza

Video Editing: Edgar Fabián Frías

Ritual 4 took place next to Coachella Valley High School in Thermal, CA (the uncededed home of the Cahuilla); featuring artists Yoli, Edgar Fabián Frías, and Thaddeus Pedisich. In this ritual and performance, Yoli embodies the “Divine Mirror”; reflecting, channeling, and interpreting the affects of environmental degradation and (neo)colonialism on the Earth in this area and Yoli’s body. Yoli was born and raised in the Coachella Valley and Imperial Valley where their family created home after the border crossed them on their journey from so-called Mexico to the so-called USA as farm workers.

Ritual 5: TXI Cement Quarry, Bloomington, CA

Documentation: Josh Vasquez, Yoli, Thaddeus Pedisich, and Demi Espinoza

Video Editing: Edgar Fabián Frías

Ritual 5 took place at the TXI Cement Quarry in Bloomington, California where Edgar Fabián Frías grew up. In this ritual, artists and witches were brought together to bear witness to the land and space.
